The method
How do you calculate porta potties for an event?
Start with 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests at an event of up to 4 hours, rounded up. Add 1 unit for every 150 guests if the event lasts longer than 4 hours. Add 1 more for every 150 guests if alcohol is served. Make at least 5% of units, and never fewer than 1, wheelchair-accessible.
- Base: guests ÷ 50, rounded up.
- Long event: over 4 hours, add guests ÷ 150, rounded up.
- Alcohol: add guests ÷ 150, rounded up.
- Accessible: at least 5% of the total, minimum 1 (ADA §213.2).
- Hand washing: 1 two-sink station per 3 toilets.
Worked example: a 150-guest, 5-hour wedding with a bar. Base 150 ÷ 50 = 3. Over 4 hours: 150 ÷ 150 = add 1. Alcohol: add 1. Total = 5 units, with 1 accessible, plus 2 hand washing stations.
| Guests | 4 hrs, no alcohol | 6 hrs, no alcohol | 6 hrs, with alcohol | Accessible (6 hrs + alcohol) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 1 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 1 |
| 200 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 1 |
| 300 | 6 | 8 | 10 | 1 |
| 500 | 10 | 14 | 18 | 1 |
| 1,000 | 20 | 27 | 34 | 2 |

How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
A construction crew of 20 or fewer workers needs 1 porta potty under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. From 20 to 199 workers, the rule is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, which is 1 standard unit per 40. At 200 workers or more, it is 1 unit per 50. Weekly service keeps the count legal.
| Workers | Units required | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 | 1 |

Call now(405) 288-7002How many porta potties do I need for 200 guests?
A 200-guest event of up to 4 hours needs 4 standard porta potties. Over 4 hours, add 2. With alcohol, add 2 more. A 6-hour wedding of 200 with a bar needs 8 units, 1 of them accessible.
How many porta potties for 50 people?
Fifty guests for up to 4 hours need 1 standard porta potty. Add a second if the event runs longer or serves alcohol.
Do women need more porta potties than men?
Events where most guests are women, like bridal showers, move slower through each unit. Add 1 unit for every 100 guests in that case. Units with urinals help most at events where most guests are men.
How many hand washing stations do I need?
Plan 1 two-sink hand washing station for every 3 toilets, and at least 1 whenever food is served.
Where does this method come from?
The event method is our own planning rule for Oklahoma events: 1 unit per 50 guests for 4 hours, plus the add-ons shown. The construction numbers come from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. The accessible-unit rule is from the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2.
