Renting a Porta Potty in Oklahoma Winter and Ice Storms
Oklahoma City's first freeze usually arrives in early November and the last one in late March. Freezing nights and the odd ice storm change how we treat tanks, where units sit and how routes run.

| Unit | Winter treatment | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard porta potty | Salt-based tank treatment each service | Ice on the door step |
| Deluxe flushing unit | Treated or drained fresh-water tank | Frozen flush pedal |
| Hand washing station | Switch to sanitizer in deep freezes | Frozen foot pump |
| Restroom trailer | Power for heat at all times | Tripped breakers |
When does it freeze in Oklahoma City?
The average first freeze in Oklahoma City comes around November 6, and the average last freeze around March 29, under NOAA 1991–2020 normals for Oklahoma City. That gives about 4.5 months when tanks, sinks and flush systems can freeze overnight. Ice storms, like the October 2020 storm that cut power to more than 300,000 Oklahoma customers, can hit even earlier.
Do porta potties freeze?
Porta potty waste tanks can freeze in a hard cold snap, but a salt-based winter treatment keeps them working in normal Oklahoma winters. Units with water, such as deluxe flushing units and hand washing stations, freeze faster, so we treat or drain them between November and March.
- Standard units: winter tank treatment at each service
- Hand washing stations: switch to sanitizer during deep freezes
- Restroom trailers: need power for heat; plan for an outlet
Where should a porta potty go on an icy site?
On an icy site, place the porta potty on high, flat ground that drains, away from roof drip lines and shaded north-facing spots where ice lingers. Keep a sand or salt bucket nearby, and clear a short path to the door. A unit on a slope can slide when the ground freezes.
What happens to service during an ice storm?
During an ice storm, service visits pause when roads are unsafe and resume as soon as trucks can travel. Missed visits are made up on the next safe day. Crews that cannot wait can add a second unit before the storm to double capacity.
